Biogas Potential

Pakistan has a potential of producing as much Biogas as it currently produces from its Gas Wells round the country

BIOGAS POTENTIAL IN PAKISTAN

Pakistan possesses 30 million heads of buffalo’s and 33 million cattle’s therefore total big animals are 63 m. Each buffalo/cow head can give on an average 15 kg of dung in a day and therefore a total of 945 m kg of dung is produced in a day and 344925 million kg of dung is produced in a year. About 10 kg of dung can produce 1 m³ of raw biogas and 1.0 m³ of raw biogas is equal to 0.6 m³ purified biogas (100% methane). Therefore, Pakistan can easily produce over 567 million m³ of biogas per day and 206,955 million m³ of biogas per annum. Therefore, Pakistan has got tremendous potential of exploiting this huge untapped potential of renewable sources of energy. In addition, biomass of all kinds including poultry waste, biodegradable solid and sewage waste. This can prove as a major source of income generation in rural areas through energy production, organic farming and earning carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) that can also help in controlling emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere.

Decentralized biogas energy production using animal dung is highly sustainable as it is economically viable, socially acceptable besides being environment friendly. A rural household possessing an average of five livestock heads can produce sufficient biogas for their daily domestic energy need besides producing decomposed manure as a rich source of soil fertility. Pakistan being the 5th largest livestock and dairy producing country can easily apply these simple and user friendly technologies at domestic and commercial scale aiming at ensuring energy security.

Go green, so there will be a better tomorrow

Biogas is considered to be a renewable resource because its production-and-use cycle is continuous, and it generates no net carbon dioxide.
